Foods that can Help with Constipation

Constipation is an uncomfortable symptom that we all have experienced at one time or another. Lucky for us it is one that can easily be remedied. Since not getting enough fiber in ones diet is often the cause the solution is more fiber.

Sure, you could buy over the counter fiber supplements, but a more enjoyable answer is to eat foods that are high in fiber. Fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains are loaded with fiber. Of all the foods these groups contain there has to be something even the pickiest of eaters loves.

Some fruits that top the list are raspberries, pears, apples and dried figs. On the vegetable side you may be surprised to find that cooked artichokes are very high in fiber followed by peas, broccoli and corn.

Considering that very few of us get the daily recommended allowance of fiber a day, (21 - 25 grams for women and 30 - 38 for men) snacking on nuts isn’t such a bad idea after all. Almonds, pistachios and pecans are all good sources of fiber. Falling in this group under the heading of legumes and very high in fiber are cooked split peas.

Last but one of my personal favorites are grains. Eating oatmeal, bran flakes and popcorn are all ways of getting fiber. It is important to read the packaging to make sure what you are eating is a good source of fiber.

While the foods we eat can help with constipation drinking water is a must. Keeping the body hydrated seems to play a part in making the system make the most of the healthy foods you use to keep it in working order.

Next time you are feeling constipated reach for the fruits, vegetables, nuts and/or grains. Be sure and wash it all down with a tall glass of water.
