What?s At The Bottom Of Your Constipation?

As if certain conditions weren’t bad enough to deal with, sometimes there are other effects to our health that we might not be anticipating. Constipation is one of these. If you’re aware that there are health problems that can cause constipation, you can take action quickly enough to hopefully avoid the worst.

Constipation is defined as three or fewer bowels movements a week, or if the stool is dry, hard, and difficult to pass. Some people report feeling bloated and legarthic. The most common reasons for constipation are a lack of fiber in the diet, too little exercise, or not taking in enough fluids, but what you might not know is many common health problems can cause constipation.

Common medical conditions that can contribute to constipation include diabetes, lupus, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, hypothyroidism, and multiple sclerosis. Anything that slows down or impedes the large intestine’s ability to move things along can cause constipation. Not only can these medical health conditions cause bowel problems, sometimes the treatment of those conditions can, too.

Many medications can cause constipation. Drugs such as codeine, sleeping aids, blood pressure pills, and anti-depressants can all contribute to cause constipation. Check on the side effects of your medications, and discuss with your doctor either alternatives or ways to treat the problem.

Often, just being aware that your particular health problem can also cause constipation will help the situation. Make sure you’re getting enough fiber in your diet, exercise regularly, and drink 8-10 glasses of water per day. If you become too uncomfortable, there are many over the counter remedies available, but make sure to check with your health care provider before using them.
